What if the first move isn’t outward… it’s upward?”
Sometimes I don’t realize how quickly I move outward.
Outward in frustration.
Outward in explanation.
Outward in defense.
Outward in correction.
My instinct is to fix what I’m feeling by saying something about it.
But Psalm 62:8 gently invites me to do something different —
to pour out my heart to God first.
Not after I’ve reacted.
Not once I’ve already replayed the conversation ten times.
Not once I’ve texted a friend about it.
First.
There is something humbling about bringing my raw reaction to Him before I bring it to anyone else. It slows me down. It softens my tone. It reminds me that I am not alone in the tension of motherhood, relationships, or disappointment.
And more than anything, it shifts me from reacting out of offense or exhaustion to responding from a place of calm trust.
I don’t always get it right.
But I’m learning that going upward first changes everything that comes after.
Maybe today, the most powerful thing we can do isn’t say more…it’s pause longer.
